Creating a Career With Curiosity, Courage and Pure Comms Energy

Kami’s journey into communications didn’t start with a tidy checklist or a rigid five year plan. It began with film school dreams, a very honest aunt, and a gap year that changed everything. Growing up as a “drama kid,” she initially imagined herself studying film and television. However, after talking things through with her aunt, she decided to build a foundation she could grow from in different directions. That small decision led her to a gap year in Cape Town, living with her aunt and shadowing her at work.

Coming from a family where communications is practically a shared language, it didn’t take long for Kami to realise she felt at home in this world. Watching how people think, collaborate and solve problems was the spark that nudged her toward comms as a career.

Studying, switching and staying curious

Her academic journey mirrored her curiosity. Kami started with a Higher Certificate in Creative Development at Vega, using it as a sandbox to explore whether she wanted something niche or something broader. She eventually chose Varsity College for its stronger, more rounded communications degree.

Then came COVID. Hybrid classes, screen fatigue and a lot of adapting on the fly. Even so, she made space for freelancing during her final year, gaining hands-on experience and building confidence.

After graduating, she found herself in the awkward space between finishing her studies and the delayed mid year graduation ceremony. She freelanced for six months, juggling clients and projects, but still felt like something was missing. “I just wasn’t standing on solid ground,” she says. What she wanted most was to learn inside a team.

Landing at Innocomm

Kami’s entrance into Innocomm felt a little like the universe nudging things into place.

Her aunt and Jax had worked together at a previous agency and stayed in touch. Whenever Kami talked about her future, one thing was constant. “I want a job. Where are the jobs? Please let me work.” So when her aunt mentioned her again, Jax offered to chat. There were no open roles, but she was willing to meet her, get a sense of who she was and see if something could work.

One conversation led to introductions with Victoria and Talitha, which led to a probation period, which very quickly became: Oh! This fits. And it has ever since.

Life after hours

Outside the office, Kami still floats heavily in the space of culture, creativity and digital trends. She’s the friend who is always up to date with what’s happening in marketing, content and brand conversations, even when she’s relaxing.

When she switches off properly, she leans into K dramas and Chinese dramas she finds through rogue TikTok snippets. If you see her indoors on the weekend, she’s probably finished the entire show because TikTok only gave her thirty seconds of plot and left her with questions.

But lately, she’s also been outdoors more. Hanging out with the girls, trying new food spots, discovering new drinks, going to festivals or anywhere with a DJ who has taste. She’s equally energised by the noise and the quiet.

The work that inspires her

Kami’s favourite campaign this year is Billie’s playful, oversized scratch and sniff deodorant stunt. Nostalgic, bold, slightly chaotic, and designed to make people laugh. She loved it instantly.

For her, marketing is much more than the digital campaigns, she gravitates toward marketing that creates an experience, not just a message. If it feels like something you’d happily stop and interact with, she’s already smiling.

Advice for future marketers

When asked what she’d tell anyone trying to break into the industry, her answer is simple. Just start.

Marketing is human. It changes every day. And the people who thrive are the ones who explore, experiment and throw themselves into learning. She encourages new marketers to take advantage of YouTube, short online courses and all the accessible knowledge available today. Trying something, even small, is better than waiting for the perfect moment.

Where she’s heading next

Right now, Kami is sharpening her skills and refining her personal style. She recently finished a social media course and has been diving into newsletters, programmes and communities to see where her voice fits best. She’s inspired by people who walk confidently in their own lane. People who create people who create their own rhythm and aren’t afraid to evolve, like Kris Jenner, Beyonce, and Gunna. And she’s working to shape that for herself too.  Her journey so far has been thoughtful, honest and fuelled by curiosity. And if there’s one thing clear from the way she speaks, learns and shows up, it’s that she’s just getting started.
